Research in Cork University Hospital

In September, Orlagh and Tess took Haiku Island Press into Cork University Hospital’s Renal Department to begin the research phase of their book-making project funded by Cork City Council.
They worked alongside patients receiving treatment to create a small collection of Haiku poems inspired by their journey’s to the hospital during the week. Staff also contributed ideas for poems and Tess and Orlagh were delighted with the level of engagement and talent of the patients as well as the warm welcome into the unit they received from the wonderful Joanne Lyons, Clinical Nurse Manager.
Haiku Island Press will be hand-making a booklet of the collection of Haiku on-site in the waiting room of the department this October and would like to thank Jo, Edelle (Arts Co-ordinator at C.U.H.) and all the staff for their support given so far to this project. The feedback from patients has been really positive and we are looking forward to the possibility of making a ‘proper’ book in the unit next year!
